Do small businesses in Chard, Frome, or other Somerset market towns actually need a website? Here's what changes before someone picks up the phone.

Short answer: yes, even if most of your customers already know who you are. A website doesn't replace word of mouth or a good local reputation, but it's usually the first thing someone checks before they act on either.
If you run a shop in Chard, it's easy to assume a website barely matters. Your customers already know you. They've seen your van, or heard your name from a neighbour. Why pay for a website when word of mouth already works?
Word of mouth still starts the conversation, but it rarely finishes it. Someone hears your name in a local Facebook group, or gets your number from a friend, and before they call, they check. They search your name, or search for what you do plus your town, just to confirm you're real, active, and worth the call. If there's nothing there, or what's there looks abandoned, that small moment of doubt can lose you the job to whoever simply looked more switched on.
There's a real upside here that gets missed. In Bristol or Exeter, you're competing with dozens of businesses for the same searches. Somewhere like Frome, the search volume is smaller, but so is the competition. A decent website can realistically dominate the handful of searches that actually matter in your specific area, something that's much harder to pull off in a bigger city.
You don't need anything elaborate. A simple three-page site, home, about, and contact, is often enough to answer the question someone's already silently asking before they call: is this a real, active business I can trust? That's exactly what my Starter package is built for, live in about a week, from £495.
